Local Projects and Davis Create Interactive World Headquarters for The Timken Company

Local Projects, the celebrated media design firm, and Davis Brand Capital, a leading brand consultancy, today released videos documenting their collaborative work for The Timken Company (NYSE: TKR), the global manufacturer of bearings and related mechanical power transmission components, and the world’s leading authority on tapered roller bearings.

The work delivered a breakthrough approach to dynamic, interactive storytelling at the new Timken World Headquarters, located in Canton, OH, showcasing the value the company creates across the diversified industrial markets it serves worldwide.

“Engineers speak their own scientific and mathematical language, and the knowledge-based solutions they create are too often invisible once applied in the field,” said Patrick T. Davis, CEO at Davis Brand Capital, which has advised Timken for several years. “We focused on making the Timken team’s specialized thinking more accessible and sharable across audiences. We highlighted the powerful relationship between knowing and making, and how these influence each other to deliver value.”

Jake Barton, whose Local Projects most recently led the design and media development for the 9/11 Memorial Museum, said, “We have a deep passion for making visible what is important but invisible, and creating relatable stories from that defines much of our work. Timken represented an incredible challenge. Timken’s engineering expertise keeps the world in motion on so many levels, and we showcased how in real terms.” Through a combination of live data, dynamic content platforms, and interactive engineering visualizations, Local Projects made Timken’s leadership in metallurgy, tribology and power transmission engaging and compelling.

“With the work of Davis and Local Projects, our customers, visitors and associates can now see, interact with and understand our industry-leading know-how in totally new ways,” said Kari Groh, Vice President, Communications and Public Relations, for The Timken Company. “The complex factors defining how Timken creates value using our remarkable knowledge-based products and solutions can now be seen and explored.”

Driving the approach and technology was a strategic rethinking of what corporate storytelling could be, particularly for an ingredient brand where the product is actually buried deep within complex industrial machinery and equipment. “Rather than start with particular media or applications in mind, we mapped the fixed and flexible moments defining the Timken story,” said Teri A. Schindler, Executive Vice President, Consulting, at Davis. “Getting clarity upfront on the difference between evergreen aspects of the story and fast-moving updates to current details revealed the media and platforms that could turn the building itself into a programmable, content-driven space.” The World Headquarters has a content management system built into it, allowing for infinite combinations of visual, data and content assets.

“The Timken story will certainly evolve as the company continues to expand globally and grow in new ways, so we clearly needed to guard against our World Headquarters’ branded environment becoming a museum the day after it opened. It was important to us to create a media and education center that perpetually represents the modern, dynamic Timken Company, and we’re delighted with how creative collaboration brought that aspiration to life,” said Groh.
